Getting Started
Valheim Beginner Guide
Valheim begins with very little direction, but the early game becomes much easier when you focus on shelter, food, basic tools, leather equipment, and Workbench upgrades in a clear order. Use these eight steps to establish a safe base and prepare for the first boss.
Gather Wood, Stone, and Food
Pick up branches and loose stone around the Meadows. Gather raspberries and mushrooms, and hunt small animals when possible. Keep multiple food types active because different foods stack their health and stamina bonuses.
Craft Your First Tools and Weapons
Craft a Stone Axe to cut trees and a Hammer for construction. A Club is an inexpensive first weapon, while a Crude Bow becomes extremely useful once you obtain Leather Scraps and can hunt deer more reliably.
Build a Shelter and Workbench
Place a Workbench and surround it with walls and a roof so it can be used for crafting and repairs. Add a bed, campfire, cooking station, and storage. Make sure smoke can escape through an opening above the fire.
Hunt Boars and Deer
Boars provide Leather Scraps, while deer provide Deer Hide and Deer Trophies. Deer Trophies are especially important because two are required to summon Eikthyr at the Mystical Altar.
Improve Your Food
Cook raw meat over a Cooking Station and combine cooked foods with gathered berries or mushrooms. Better food dramatically improves survivability, stamina for running and attacking, and the number of mistakes you can survive.
Keep three different foods active before dangerous exploration or boss fights.
Upgrade the Workbench
Build nearby Workbench improvements such as the Chopping Block and Tanning Rack when their recipes become available. Higher Workbench levels allow you to improve leather armor, bows, tools, and other early equipment.
Explore the Meadows
Search abandoned structures, ruined buildings, burial markers, coastlines, and nearby forests. Mark berry patches, boar spawns, valuable buildings, and the location of Eikthyr's altar on your map.
Avoid pushing deep into the Black Forest until you have reliable food, weapons, armor, and a nearby respawn point.
Prepare for Eikthyr
Bring a bow or dependable melee weapon, upgraded leather equipment, cooked food, and two Deer Trophies. Eikthyr uses lightning attacks, charges, and close-range strikes, so manage stamina and avoid attacking continuously.
Reward: Eikthyr's trophy and Hard Antlers, which let you craft the Antler Pickaxe and begin mining ore.
Boss Progression
Valheim Bosses and Progression Guide
Valheim's main progression is built around defeating the Forsaken. Each victory provides a trophy, a Forsaken Power, and usually an important item that helps you survive the next biome.
Eikthyr
Summon
Offer 2 Deer Trophies at Eikthyr's Mystical Altar.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Use cooked food, leather equipment, and a bow or reliable melee weapon. Preserve stamina so you can dodge or reposition between attacks.
Reward: Hard Antlers for crafting the Antler Pickaxe.
Unlocks: Allows reliable mining of Copper and Tin in the Black Forest.
The Elder
Summon
Burn 3 Ancient Seeds at The Elder's altar.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Bring strong food, upgraded Bronze Age equipment, a bow with plenty of arrows, and use the altar pillars as cover from ranged attacks.

Unlocks: Opens Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, giving access to Scrap Iron.
Bonemass
Summon
Offer 10 Withered Bones at Bonemass' altar.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Use Poison Resistance Mead and a strong blunt weapon such as an Iron Mace. Maintain the Rested effect and bring high-health food.
Reward: Wishbone.
Unlocks: The Wishbone helps locate hidden Silver deposits in the Mountains.
Moder
Summon
Place 3 Dragon Eggs at Moder's altar.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Use Frost Resistance Mead until you have suitable Mountain gear, bring a strong bow and arrows, and prepare the arena so steep terrain does not restrict movement.
Reward: Dragon Tear.
Unlocks: Dragon Tears craft the Artisan Table, opening important Plains-era crafting structures.
Yagluth
Summon
Place 5 Fuling Totems at Yagluth's altar.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Bring strong Plains-tier food, fire resistance, upgraded armor, and high-quality weapons. Use terrain and pillars to reduce exposure to ranged fire attacks.
Reward: Yagluth Thing.
Unlocks: Marks completion of the Plains boss stage and progression toward the Mistlands.
The Queen
Summon
Use a Sealbreaker assembled from fragments to open her Infested Citadel; repeat summons use Seeker Soldier trophies.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Bring upgraded Mistlands equipment, strong food, healing and stamina meads, and an appropriate melee, ranged, or magic build. Control summoned enemies instead of focusing only on the boss.
Reward: Majestic Carapace.
Unlocks: Completes the Mistlands boss stage and prepares you for Ashlands progression.
Fader
Summon
Collect the required bell fragments, craft the bells, and place them at Fader's arena to begin the encounter.
Major Attacks
Preparation
Use upgraded Ashlands equipment, the strongest available foods and meads, and prepare for sustained fire damage in a large combat arena. Mobility and stamina management are critical.
Reward: Fader's boss rewards and the final Forsaken progression milestone.
Unlocks: Represents the major boss milestone of the Ashlands biome.
World Progression
Valheim Biomes and Progression
Moving into a new biome too early is one of the fastest ways to lose equipment in Valheim. Progress is smoother when you defeat the current biome's boss, upgrade your gear, prepare resistance items, and establish a nearby portal before exploring the next region.

Armor & Equipment
Valheim Armor and Gear Guide
Armor progression in Valheim is not simply about equipping the highest armor value. Building & Bases
Valheim Building and Base Guide
A practical Valheim base shortens the time spent moving between storage, crafting stations, food production, portals, and sleeping areas. Structural support and smoke management are the two mechanics most likely to trip up new builders.
Choose a Safe Base Location
Early GameReduce travel time while leaving room for farming and expansion.
- Build the first permanent base in or near the Meadows when possible.
- Look for flat terrain close to water, wood, stone, and useful neighboring biomes.
- Leave open ground for future crops, animal pens, storage buildings, and portals.
Tip: A convenient location is usually more valuable than an elaborate early building - boats and portals will later connect distant resources.
Place a Workbench and Basic Shelter
Early GameCreate the first protected crafting and repair area.
- Place a Workbench to create a construction area.
- Build walls and a roof around the crafting space so the Workbench works normally.
- Add a bed once the shelter is enclosed and protected.
Tip: Workbench coverage is also used around bases to suppress unwanted creature spawning inside protected areas.
Understand Structural Support
All StagesPrevent roofs, towers, and upper floors from collapsing.
- Use the piece color shown while aiming to judge support strength.
- Blue pieces are grounded; green, yellow, orange, and red indicate progressively weaker support.
- Connect important vertical supports to the ground instead of extending from weak upper pieces.
- Use Core Wood, stone, and iron-reinforced beams for larger structures.
Tip: Red pieces are close to their support limit and usually cannot carry significant additional construction.
Ventilate Fires and Smoke
Early GameKeep indoor fires active without filling the house with smoke.
- Place fires on suitable ground or supported hearth areas.
- Create a chimney, raised roof opening, or other clear path for smoke to escape.
- Protect the smoke outlet with roofing so rain does not extinguish exposed fires.
Tip: Smoke trapped inside enclosed buildings damages characters and can make a base miserable to use.
Build a Central Crafting Hub
Early to Mid GameKeep crafting stations and upgrades close to relevant storage.
- Reserve one area for the Workbench and its upgrades.
- Create a Forge section once Copper and Tin progression begins.
- Leave room for later stations such as the Stonecutter, Artisan Table, Black Forge, and Galdr Table.
- Store common crafting materials near the station that consumes them.
Tip: Planning station expansion early prevents upgrades from being blocked by walls or furniture later.
Organize Storage by Resource Type
All StagesReduce time spent searching for crafting materials.
- Keep food and cooking ingredients near the kitchen.
- Store ore, metal, coal, and smelting materials near the furnace and Forge.
- Keep wood, stone, hides, and trophies in separate labeled storage groups.
- Place a small dump chest near the entrance for quickly unloading after exploration.
Tip: Storage efficiency matters more every biome as several biomes' worth of materials accumulate.
Create a Rested and Comfort Area
All StagesMaintain a strong Rested bonus before leaving the base.
- Group comfort-generating furniture around the sleeping and resting area.
- Upgrade the fire source and furniture as better materials become available.
- Rest before long mining trips, boss fights, sailing, or dangerous exploration.
Tip: The Rested effect improves health and stamina regeneration, making comfort one of the best non-combat investments.
Build a Portal Hub
Mid to Late GameConnect distant biomes, bosses, farms, and resource outposts.
- Place portals in a dedicated room or clearly labeled hub.
- Use matching portal tags to connect destinations.
- Keep one spare portal for temporary exploration links.
- Remember that standard portals restrict ores and metals under default settings.
- Late-game Stone Portals can transport materials normal portals cannot carry.
Tip: A spare emergency portal dramatically reduces travel time when exploring new continents.
Add Raid Defenses
Mid to Late GameKeep enemies away from crafting, farming, and breeding areas.
- Use walls, gates, terrain, and elevation to control enemy movement.
- Moats and raised earth barriers stop most ground enemies.
- Keep valuable animals and crops away from the outer wall.
- Prepare extra protection against flying enemies because ground obstacles do not stop them.
Tip: Leave a buffer between the defensive line and valuable buildings instead of placing everything against the perimeter.
Expand into a Late-Game Compound
Late GameSeparate specialized activities while keeping a fast central workflow.
- Use a central hall for portals, comfort, and general storage.
- Create separate wings for crafting, cooking, smelting, farming, and magic equipment.
- Upgrade structures with stone, Black Marble, and iron-supported construction as available.
- Maintain small biome outposts instead of hauling every activity back to one location.
Tip: The most efficient late-game setup is one comfortable central base plus specialized farms and outposts connected by portals.
